Richmond Local History Society

Registered Charity No. 292907

Our aims

The purpose of the Richmond Local History Society is to encourage research into every aspect of the local history of Richmond, Kew, Petersham and Ham, and to publish the results whenever feasible.

A Newsletter, three times a year, informs members of the dates of meetings, visits, exhibitions, new publications and research projects in progress. The Newsletter also contains reports of meetings and visits, and book reviews.

The Society is particularly keen to help new researchers in every way it can, whether they are pursuing chosen subjects of their own or would like suggestions for new projects. Local History Research Workshops are promoted by the Society.

Activities

Lecture meetings are held monthly from October to May. The main emphasis is upon topics related to the varied aspects of local history, but the programme also includes other relevant subjects. Meetings are also sometimes held jointly with other societies and members can participate in events such as the annual West London Local History Conference.

Visits to local houses and buildings of historic interest, not normally open to the public, are an important feature of our programme, as are guided walks around areas of interest in the Borough and its environs. Day trips by coach are also arranged to take members to historic houses and sites further afield, particularly those with local connections.

Publications

New publications: Richmond History, Journal of the RLHS No. 33, Ham and Petersham in Wartime by Leonard Chave and J.M. Lee and Petersham: radar and operational research 1940-1946 by J.M. Lee.

Richmond History, the Society's Journal, published annually since 1985, comprises articles and short papers by members and others. Over the years, this publication has yielded many items of permanent value for the local historian as well as other fascinating local topics.

Contributions are always needed for the Journal on any subject connected with the histories of Richmond, Ham, Petersham or Kew. The Journal and other RLHS publications are on sale at the Museum of Richmond, local bookshops and – with a discount for members – at the Society's meetings. Copies are also held in the Richmond Local Studies Collection at the Old Town Hall.
